Research Funding Opportunities

NHS Student Research Grants Funds

Since 2006, the Student Research Fund has supported the research and research-related travel by student at UNC. The fund is partially supported through donations by faculty, staff and friends of the college in addition to proceeds generated by the NHS Student Research Celebration. These funds are made available to students through a competitive proposal process. Additional funding for research from the Phelps Family NHS CAP Student Research Grants and Awards Fund, further supports NHS undergraduate student research efforts and success.

Calls for proposals are made twice each academic year. Proposals received by the deadline, announcde by the Dean's Office, will be reviewed by the NHS Student Reserach Grants Committee, which will recommend an allocation and distribution of research project funds to the Dean of the College.

Student Research Awards

The NHS CAP Student Research Awards were created by the Phelps Family CAP Trust. These Awards support undergraduate research in the College of Natural and Health Sciences.

Additionally, through these CAP Student Research Grants and Awards, the Donors also desire to share an understanding of three (3) “CAP” values and behaviors whichthe Donors believe are among the foundation pillars for building and living meaningful lives:

  • Contribute…by volunteering time and personal skills, talents, abilities, experience and passion around issues in service to the community;
  • Achieve…by displaying a bias toward action and performance (including academically), self-reliance, persevering, and overcoming obstacles to accomplishing goals;
  •  Pay-it-forward…by impacting the lives of others in meaningful and positive ways to them through small or large, random or planned, acts of kindness, caring, and “giving back.”

Three (3) Awards of up to $5,000 each are available for the academic year through a competitive proposal process. A call for proposals will be made available typically during the fall semester of the academic year, with an application deadline in spring. Each Award shall be divided equally among multiple members of a recipient research team, if applicable.
