Common Registration Errors

Here are some common registration error and restriction messages. It may be possible to receive an instructor override. 

The best way to contact an instructor for an override is via email. All UNC emails are firstname.lastname@unco.edu.

If you receive an override from the instructor, you must still register for the course through Ursa. Faculty do not have the ability to register you. Register using the CRN number directly in the Add Classes Worksheet.

  • You are not permitted to register at this time

    Students register based on the number of completed units and by level. If you receive this message, you are trying to register before your designated registration date. View the Registration Schedule to determine your designated registration time slot. 

  • Student Status prohibits registration

    If the student has an inactive status on their student record, they will receive this error. Contact the Office of the Registrar to determine the best way to reactivate the account. 

  • You may not add or drop classes due to holds on your record

    Student has a hold on their account which prevents registration. Contact the department that placed the hold to resolve. 

  • Class Restriction

    Registration is restricted to specific class level(s) i.e. Juniors or Seniors. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • Closed Section

    Course is full. Add to Waitlist if available or contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • College Restriction

    Course registration is restricted to a specific college. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • Cohort Restriction

    Course registration is restricted to specific program cohort(s). Contact the instructor of record or the Program Coordinator for permission to enter the class.

  • Co-Requisite Required

    A co-requisite course must be registered for at the same time. Co-req course must be added at the same time before hitting acknowledge/submit. (Ex. Comm 100 and 103)

  • Duplicate CRN

    Attempting to register for the same course twice. Cannot register for a section more than once.

  • Equivalent Course Exclusion

    An Equivalent Course Exclusion error occurs when you attempt to enroll in a class that is equivalent with another class in which you already have credit (or have already enrolled). Courses are considered equivalent when they have significant overlapping or identical content. Student are only allowed to receive degree credit for one of the equivalent classes. 

  • Field of Study Restriction

    Course registration is restricted to specific Major and Minor only. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • Instructor Approval

    Instructor consent is needed to enter the course. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be need.

  • Level Restriction

    Undergraduate student attempting to register for a graduate-level course. 

  • Link Error

    Lecture and lab courses must be added together. Register for both courses at the same time.

  • Major Restriction

    Course registration is restricted to specific Major only. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • Maximum Hours

    Attempting to register for more than 18 hours (undergraduates) or 17 hours (graduate students). A Course Overload Request (Graduate or Undergraduate) form is required. Contact the Office of the Registrar at 970-351-4862 for more information.

  • Minor Restriction

    Course registration is restricted to specific Minor only. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • Prerequisite Restriction

    Must meet all prerequisites of the course to register. See Catalog for course prerequisities. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

  • Time Conflict with CRN #

    Time conflict with another course on your schedule. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.
