Dress Code, Fragrance-Free Environments
The IRIS Project recognizes that we are all working professionals. While onsite, the dress code is business casual.
IRIS’s shared spaces are Fragrance-free environments during training sessions
IRIS recognizes that when in a shared space individuals may have sensitivity and/or allergic reactions to various fragrant products. Personal fragrant products (fragrances, colognes, lotions, powders and other similar products) that are perceptible to others should not be worn while we are in session.
Business casual clothing is expected while you are in training.
Examples typically include slacks or khakis, dress shirts or blouses, open-collar or polo shirts, dresses or skirts, and knit shirts or sweaters. Business casual does not include blue jeans or flip flops. We understand that this can vary slightly depending on style, preference, and gender presentation.
When packing, you should consider:
Bring comfortable walking shoes.
You will be walking around campus.
Dressing in layers.
Weather changes quickly and inside is air conditioned.
Bring comfortable clothing for your free time. Bring exercise clothing or swimwear if you plan to use UNC’s Recreation Center.
Survival Tips
This is an intensive program. You are in session all day interacting with peers and this might be the first in-person event you’ve attended for some time. You have left your home, job, and family/support people and this may be a challenging experience. The goal of the summer session is to provide you with the foundation you need to successfully complete this program.
Altitude sickness is a very real thing. You will be living and training at a mile above sea level. No matter where you are from, keep yourself hydrated!
You are here to learn – allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone, be open to learning new things, and continue to question and challenge yourself. You are here to grow as a person and professional. Comparing yourself to your colleagues is unproductive & often adds to stress levels.
The more work you put into the program, the more you will get out of it.
Colleagues are your best support system. They understand what you are going through and can empathize. Colleagues can also provide alternate points of view and serve as additional information sources to the curriculum being taught.
Trust and sharing makes a great learning community. What happens in the training stays in the training.
This session is rigorous and can be stressful. Be sure to find time to relax, take a walk, exercise, and breathe deeply.
