Undergraduate Fees
Fall 2025/Spring 2026/Summer 2026
There are a variety of fees for students, some are mandatory including Student Activity, LEAF, Technology and Capital Fees. University policy is that students pay for these fees regardless of whether they choose to participate in or use those services available to them. Other fees are based upon use such as Parking and Health Insurance.
How Undergraduate Tuition and Fees are Used
At a public university, tuition and fees are used to fund a wide range of essential services and operations. This includes maintaining and improving campus facilities, supporting academic programs, providing student services like counseling and career support, and funding technology and library resources. Additionally, some fees cover things like campus safety, student activities, and transportation. Together, tuition and fees help keep the university running and ensure students have access to quality education and a positive campus experience.
Tuition
Covers classroom instruction, student services, administration and facilities. Based on cost and demand, differential tuition may be charged for certain classes (Sciences/SES/Art, Business, Nursing, Theatre). Detailed information about differential tuition.
Common Fees
There are assessment, course, participation and supervision fees depending on the course. Courses that charge these fees cost more to deliver either because of required consumables (e.g., lab materials), field trips, individualized instruction (e.g., clinical supervision for Nursing students, student teaching for teacher candidates). There are also program fees which augment funding of the delivery of high-cost programs (Music, Theatre, and Art in CPVA and the Nursing Program in NHS). Expenses covered include, but are not limited to, supplies, repair and replacement of instruments, equipment.
Program Fees do not apply to Extended Campus.
Assessment Fees – Assessment Fees are charged to cover the cost of third party tests. The fee is passed through to an external vendor. These are primarily used in applied psychology and special education courses where students are learning to administer and interpret tests as part of their curriculum. See the Assessment Fees section for more information.
Course Fees – Course fees are charged to underwrite in whole or in part the cost of consumable supplies in a laboratory or classroom including the replacement of specialized non-capital (under $5,000) laboratory equipment. These fees are primarily for science, art and theatre. See the Course Fees section for more information.
Participation Fees – Participation Fees are charged for courses where the amount of the fee is passed through to a vendor for the use of specialized facilities or services. This may also cover costs associated with field trips required for the course. Examples include ski passes and archaeology field trips. See the Participation Fees section for more information.
Program Fees – Program fees augment funding of the delivery of high-cost programs (Music, Theatre, and Art in CPVA and the Nursing Program in NHS). Expenses covered include, but are not limited to, supplies, repair and replacement of instruments, equipment. See the Program Fees section for more information.
Supervision Fees – Supervision Fees are charged to cover the cost of faculty travel and related expenses for supervision of clinical, student teaching and similar courses. These are primarily for Education and Behavioral Sciences practicums and observations, and Nursing clinical courses at off-site locations. See the Supervision Fees section for more information.
The Student Leadership for Environmental Action Fund (Student LEAF) is intended to move the campus community toward a sustainability-minded culture. This fund finances environmental improvements in campus infrastructure and educational initiatives. Student LEAF is managed by a committee led by students, staff and faculty representation. A student fee of $1 per credit hour up to 10 credit hours each semester (up to $20 per a traditional academic year) sustains the fund. The savings generated from the projects are being reinvested in ways that are directly visible to the student body. To be eligible, projects must seek to improve campus resource efficiency, strengthen the community, and provide practical career experiences for students. For example, a project might be proposed to fund and/or include academic involvement in developing a highly efficient irrigation system.
Note: The total fee for 10 credit hours or greater is $10.00 for LEAF Fee.
The Student Capital Fee supports bonded facility debt service and facility operations as well as capital repair and replacement. Per credit hour charges of $56.48 are assessed for credits enrolled in from 1 through 10.
Note: The total fee for 10 credit hours or greater is $564.80 for Capital Fees.
Student services and support are funded by this portion of the Student Fees. Per credit hour charges of $69.12 are assessed for credits enrolled in from 1 through 10.
The services funded include, but are not limited to:
- Athletic Events
- Asian Pacific-American Student Services
- Performing Arts Events
- Student Clubs & Organizations

One of the most obvious components to a successful transition is our orientation program. The program includes learning about UNC resources and hearing expectations as member of the institution.
Other components include:
- Advising related to a student’s academic goals, aptitudes and career goals (which is different than faculty advising about specific courses to take)
- On-going assessment and development of programs that are specifically designed to help students effectively navigate the transition from the mode of learning at a high school or community college and the mode of learning necessary to be successful at a University.
Examples include the development of the University 101 first year seminar and appropriate placement in foundational courses like math and English.
