Woodwinds Audition Requirements
Undergraduates
Flute
- Two pieces or movements of works from contrasting style periods. If movements of work are chosen, they must come from separate compositions.
- Applicant’s choices should demonstrate both lyrical and “technical” playing abilities.
- All major, minor, and chromatic scales.
Clarinet
- Prepare four scales of your choice (major or minor).
- Prepare two solo pieces:
- One piece should be primarily technical. The Weber Concertino is suggested, but you can choose another work of similar difficulty if you prefer.
- The other piece should be a lyrical etude from the Rose 32 Etudes (for example, #1 or 3 or 5).
- Sightreading may be asked at the audition.
Oboe
- Please prepare two contrasting works:
- One etude (Barret, Ferling, Bozza, Brod, Rubank, etc.)
- One movement from a piece of your choosing from the oboe solo repertoire.
- Applicants are highly encouraged to include repertoire by female composers and composers from an underrepresented background.
- All Major, Minor, and Chromatic scales.
Bassoon
- All major, minor, and chromatic scales.
- Two contrasting solo selections from the standard repertoire, which may include etudes by Weissenborn and Milde.
- Sight reading may be provided at the audition.
Saxophone
- Applicants should be prepared to perform their major scales.
- Two musical selections that demonstrate technical and musical proficiency. These selections can be etudes or pieces.
Graduates
Flute
- MM: Candidates should prepare a 20 minute program consisting of works representing music between the Baroque and Modern periods.
- Include the first or second movements of either Mozart’s G Major or D Major flute concertos.
- 3 standard principal flute orchestral excerpts should be prepared for the audition.
- DA: Candidates should prepare a 30 minute program consisting of works representing between the Baroque and Modern periods, from which the committee will make selections at the audition.
- *A contemporary work written after 1980 must be included in this program, as well as the first and second movements of a standard flute concerto.
- 3 standard principal flute orchestral excerpts should be prepared for the audition.
Clarinet
- Prepare selections from at least 2-3 works displaying your full range of technical and musical skill. Total performance time for these works should be approximately 15-20 minutes.
- Prepare 4 orchestral excerpts (or military band excerpts) of your choice.
- Prepare any 6 major and 6 minor scales of your choice.
- Sightreading may be asked at the audition.
Oboe
- Please prepare 3 contrasting solo works of your choosing.
- In addition, please prepare the exposition of the Mozart Oboe Concerto and 3 other contrasting excerpts of your choosing.
- Applicants are highly encouraged to include repertoire by female composers and composers from an underrepresented background.
Bassoon
- All major, minor, and chromatic scales.
- Two contrasting solo selections from the standard repertoire.
- Perform 4 orchestral excerpts of your choice.
- Sight reading may be provided at the audition.
Saxophone
- Applicants should be prepared to perform a variety of musical selections that demonstrate current technical and musical proficiency.
- One baroque transcription is required.
