Strings Audition Requirements
Undergraduates
Violin
- A combination of works representing technical and musical versatility. Pieces by underrepresented composers are encouraged.
Viola
- A combination of works representing technical and musical versatility. Pieces by underrepresented composers are encouraged.
Cello
- A combination of works representing technical and musical versatility. Pieces by underrepresented composers are encouraged.
Double Bass
- A combination of works representing technical and musical versatility. Pieces by underrepresented composers are encouraged.
Classical Guitar
- One standard study piece or etude by Sor, Aguado, Giuliani, Carcassi, Coste, Villa-Lobos, or Brouwer.
- Two pieces of applicant’s choice, preferably of contrasting historical periods.
- One two-octave major scale and the relative melodic minor of applicant’s choice.
- Sight-reading and sight-singing may be asked.
Graduates
Violin

- A post-1950 work of applicant’s choice.
Viola

- Two standard orchestral excerpts.
Classical Guitar
- A substantial movement by J.S. Bach.
- Two substantial pieces of the applicant’s choice.
