Writing Minor
Program Director: Lisa Zimmerman
The writing minor is a cross-disciplinary undergraduate program designed to strengthen and advance students' writing abilities. Students study the history as well as theories of writing, and gain competence in writing about different subjects, for different purposes and audiences, and in different genres and styles.
The program allows students to focus on areas of specific interest to them (e.g., creative writing or professional writing), as well as to craft an internship that serves their long-term professional goals. We offer creative writing courses from the introductory to the advanced levels, in screenwriting, poetry, prose fiction, and creative non-fiction. We also offer advanced special topics courses in editing, stylistics, and autobiography and memoir. Our writing instructors have published numerous books of fiction and poetry, as well as scholarly essays on a variety of topics.

Film Studies Minor
Program Director and Student Advisor: Burke Hilsabeck
The film studies minor offers courses in film history, theory, and criticism, and is designed for students who wish to study the political, historical, cultural, aesthetic, and social significance of the art form. In this interdisciplinary program, students will begin with an introduction to film (FILM 120) before proceeding to specialized courses that examine American and global cinemas from various theoretical and thematic perspectives. The goal of the minor is to provide students with an understanding of film as a distinct art form, with its own unique history, language, mechanics, and principles of production and reception.
Students will learn to "read" film and interpret it through an examination of its individual elements as well as by discussing how these parts fit together as a whole. Moreover, students are encouraged through this program of study to understand better the connections between cinema and the general importance of visual representation in contemporary culture. The Minor in Film Studies is an interdisciplinary program, which means that it includes perspectives from a variety of disciplines, consideration of film in various periods of the history of cinema, as well as films produced in various global cultures.
UNC’s film faculty regularly offer variable-topic courses on such subjects as “Melodramas and Musicals,” “On Stardom and Celebrity,” “Monsters and Madmen,” and “Queer Theory.” We also offer introductory courses in filmmaking and screenwriting.
Program Requirements
The Film Studies Minor comprises 15 credit hours of required courses and 6 credit hours of electives, making a total of 21 hours. Please note that some courses have prerequisites. The requirements are described in detail in the UNC Catalog, and the Film Studies Program has developed a recommendation for completing the program within four years.
Declaring a Minor in Film Studies
There are no application requirements for students wishing to declare the minor. However, students must fill in the standard minor declaration form, which is available in the main office of the Department of English (Ross Hall). Students must pass their classes with a grade of D or better, and must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 in the minor. The Film Studies Director may approve variable topic courses offered by other program areas as minor electives, provided they exhibit a significant focus in film studies.
