About Us

Supporting your growth and building a strong, connected UNC community—one Bear at a time.

Campus Recreation is a student fee-funded department that fosters an inclusive environment for students to develop healthy behaviors and personal skills. Through programs like Club & Intramural Sports, Fitness & Wellness, Aquatics, Outdoor Pursuits, and Informal Recreation, students engage in active learning and healthy practices. Our values of inclusivity, collaboration, equity, diversity, well-being, and personal growth drive our programming and staff development. We are committed to building a strong community that embraces these values and supports student success.

At Campus Recreation, we’re all about creating a space where you feel safe, supported, and included. We welcome and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and identities of our community. Our programs are built to promote respect, understanding, and social connection—because when everyone feels seen and valued, we all thrive. Your well-being matters, and we’re here to help you grow, belong and succeed.
As a member of the Division of Student Affairs team, you play a vital role in fostering our Culture of CARE—which stands for Connect, Attitude, Respect, and Empathy.
This culture is rooted in:
  • Empathy for each individual’s experience
  • Community building that brings us together
  • Civility in how we communicate and collaborate
  • Recognition of one another’s contributions
  • Exceptional service that puts students first
Together, we create a welcoming environment where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Campus Recreation is a place where everyone is welcome. The Rec Center has features like a pool lift, a climbing system with support, and an upper-body bike to help make things more accessible. Many of our programs work for different fitness levels. If you want extra help, our personal trainers can work with you—at a price that’s affordable for students. We’re here to support you, listen to what you need, and help you feel good about being active.
At Campus Rec, you’re welcome just as you are. You can join any program, use any facility, or take part in any event based on your gender identity—no questions asked, no proof needed. Just show up, be yourself, and have fun. We’re glad you’re here.
Our gender-neutral restroom is here to support your comfort and privacy—no matter your reason for using it.
It’s a welcoming option for:
  • Transgender or gender nonconforming individuals
  • Parents with children of a different gender
  • People with disabilities who have a caregiver of a different gender
  • Anyone needing a Koala Kare changing station
  • Anyone who simply prefers a private, single-stall restroom
Everyone is welcome. Use the space that works best for you.

Policies

Membership Reminder: Show Your ID
To enter the Rec Center, you’ll need to show a valid UNC ID or Rec Center Membership Card each time you visit.
Forgot your card or it’s damaged? No worries—we’ve got you covered once. You can still get in by:
Showing another form of ID
Providing your Bear ID number
Signing a quick waiver to acknowledge our policies
After that, be sure to fix the issue before your next visit—otherwise, access will be denied.
Have questions? Stop by the front desk—we’re happy to help!
What to Wear in the Rec Center
We want you to stay safe and comfortable while using our equipment. Here are a few quick guidelines to help you dress for success:
  • Skip the zippers and studs. Clothing with metal parts can damage equipment—please leave those items at home.
  • Avoid sweat-enhancing gear. Clothing like vinyl suits, layered sweatshirts, or anything designed to increase sweating may get caught in machines.
  • Wear proper athletic shoes. Shoes must be non-marking and fully cover your feet. (Exceptions are made for official Campus Rec activities like yoga.)
  • Tops are required. Please wear at least one layer of a shirt at all times while in the facility.
Need help figuring out what’s okay to wear? Just ask—we’re here to help you have a great (and safe) workout!
Help Keep Our Spaces Clean and Safe
We all play a part in creating a healthy, comfortable workout environment. Here’s how you can help:
  • Wipe down equipment after each use with Gym Wipes from the silver dispensers.
  • Use a sweat towel as a barrier between your skin and equipment padding.
  • Cover any open cuts or sores with a bandage or wrap. Need supplies? The Front Desk has first aid items.
  • Limit skin-to-pad contact—try to avoid placing bare legs or arms directly on equipment.
  • Wear a shirt during high-contact activities to reduce skin-to-skin contact. Need a pinnie? We’ve got extras at the Front Desk.
  • Feeling sick? If you’ve had a fever or other symptoms, please wait 24 hours before returning to the Rec.
Thanks for helping keep the Rec Center a clean and welcoming space for everyone!
Keep Your Belongings Safe
  • For your safety—and the safety of others—please store personal items in a locker while you’re at the Rec.
  • Be sure to lock up your belongings. The Campus Recreation Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Need help finding a locker? Just ask—we’re happy to help!
