Student Health Insurance Program

Each year, UNC staff work to develop and offer a student health insurance plan that provides students with the best benefits for the lowest price.

The student health insurance is a gold-level plan under the Affordable Care Act. That means you pay lower out-of-pocket costs for services you receive, compared to many other health insurance plans. It provides year-round coverage at Cigna network providers across the United States. Scroll down for specific information about coverage dates and costs.

2025–2026 Student Health Insurance Costs & Coverage Dates 

Fall 2025 Premium: $1,692 

If you’re automatically enrolled in UNC’s Student Health Insurance Plan, the fall premium of $1,692 will be added to your student account. 

  • Coverage begins: August 17, 2025 
  • Coverage ends: December 31, 2025 at 11:59 PM 

Spring 2026 Premium: $1,692 

If you’re enrolled in the spring semester, you’ll be charged $1,692 for the spring plan. 

  • Coverage begins: January 1, 2026 
  • Coverage ends: August 16, 2026 at 11:59 PM 

Bonus: If you’re enrolled in the Spring 2026 plan, you’re automatically covered through the summer—even if you’re not taking summer classes. 

Want Summer-Only Coverage? 

If you weren’t enrolled in the spring but want coverage for summer only, you can still sign up. 

  • Summer-only cost: $907 
  • Coverage dates: May 11, 2026 – August 16, 2026 

The student health insurance plan covers you 24/7 at home or on campus, and it includes benefits for travel emergencies.
