Student Health Insurance Program
An insurance waiver must be completed every fall semester to waive the insurance for the entire school year. If you complete the waiver for fall 2019, your insurance premium will be waived for spring 2020 as well (you can re-enroll at anytime).
All Undergraduate students taking 9 or more credit hours and all Degree Seeking Graduate
students with 6 or more credits, regardless of the type of class (on campus, off campus,
online only) are required to have full coverage health insurance. Students who meet
the credit hour criteria will be automatically enrolled in the UNC Student Health
Insurance Plan and the cost will be added to your UNC student tuition bill. All international students regardless
of the number of credit hours will be charged for the UNC insurance plan. See the
link below for more information on this requirement.
International Students: Please visit the Center For International Education website for information regarding health insurance for international students and waiving the UNC Insurance plan with comparable coverage.
Domestic students have the option to waive out of the UNC insurance plan by completing the online insurance waiver showing proof of other health insurance coverage prior to the deadline, which is always the 10th day of classes each semester. If a waiver is completed for the UNC Student Health Insurance Plan for Fall semester, the enrollment and subsequent charge for Spring semester will also be waived. If you have questions regarding re-enrollment in the UNC Insurance Plan, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 970-351-1915. If you are an international student and have questions regarding the UNC health insurance requirement, or waiving the school plan, contact the Center for International Education.
Veterans: Check your GI benefits before waiving the school insurance plan. Many times the GI Bill will cover the cost of this plan that can be used anywhere Cigna insurance is accepted.
