Toolkit for Legal Interpreters

Resources: Shifting Perspectives

Shifting Perspectives: Navigating the Legal System Thru Deaf Eyes was a national training hosted by UNC Project CLIMB at the University of Northern Colorado in May 2019.

The training brought together individuals who worked with deaf people who had to navigate the legal system. The purpose of this national training was to explore and understand the impact that interpreters have on that process. The experts were deaf people who shared their lived experiences through recorded narratives and individuals who represented deaf rights and advocacy organizations and the attorneys who represented deaf people in various stages of legal experiences; criminal, family, & civil matters.

Shifting Perspectives provided the opportunity for interpreters to shift their perspectives and to hear directly from these experts which had never been done before. A total of 237 individuals attended the national training and represented 41 states, 1 U.S. territory (PR), & Ontario, Canada.

The following learning module was derived from this national training. This module is self-contained and captures the national training for on-going learning.
