Minor Overview
UNC’s Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy minor helps you explore some of the most pressing questions of our time. What does justice look like? How do we balance personal freedom with social responsibility? Can moral claims hold true for everyone? This 18-credit program starts with foundational courses in moral issues, ethical theory and political thought. You’ll then move into more specialized areas such as environmental ethics, philosophy of law, feminist theory and social justice.
This minor is a strong complement to majors across the humanities, social sciences and professional fields. You’ll sharpen skills in critical reasoning, writing and oral communication while examining the real-world impact of ethics and political ideas. Many students use this program to enrich their preparation for graduate study, law, policy, public service, education and advocacy. Faculty in the program are dedicated to helping you connect philosophy to lived experience and guide you in applying big ideas to practical challenges.
Build a strong foundation in ethics and political philosophy while tailoring the minor to your interests. This 18-credit program combines required courses in ethical theory with flexible electives that let you explore applied and interdisciplinary topics.
The Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy minor at UNC requires 18 credits, including:
- Ethical Foundations (6 credits):
All students take Moral Issues and Ethical Theory to build a base for advanced study. - Social/Political Theory (3 credits):
Choose at least one course in areas such as social and political philosophy or feminist theory. - Applied Philosophy (3 credits):
Select at least one course that connects theory to current issues like environmental ethics, law or public policy. - Interdisciplinary Electives (6 credits):

Students may choose additional courses in social/political theory or applied philosophy in place of interdisciplinary electives. PHIL 365 is a variable title course and may be repeated under different subtitles. Certain advanced philosophy courses may count toward the minor with advisor approval, and students are encouraged to consult with their advisor each semester.
