Housing Contract Terms and Conditions

Students review and sign the Terms and Conditions during the application process.

Each student agrees to the terms and conditions of the housing contract when they complete the contract online. Terms and conditions are

Most first-year students—meaning students attending college for the first time—are required to live on campus during their first year at UNC.

If you believe you qualify for an exemption, you’ll need to submit a request through your housing portal.

Choose the form that best fits your situation:

If you’re living in the local area – complete the form titled “Residency Requirement Exemption – Local Area Students.”
If you need an exemption for another reason – complete the form titled “Petition for Release from First-Year Live-On Requirement.”

Make sure to submit your request as early as possible so we have time to review it before housing assignments are finalized.

If you’re living in Arlington Park, you can sublet your space during the summer session—as long as the person you’re subletting to is:

Planning to sublet during a different term?
Reach out to the Housing team first to discuss your options.

Subleasing can be a great way to keep your space while you’re away—just make sure everything’s approved and in place before making arrangements.

If you’re currently living on campus and would like to request a room change, you’re welcome to submit a Room Move Request.

Requests are processed in the order they’re received and depend on space availability within your current hall.

Spring Semester Room Moves:

Be sure to submit your request early if you’re hoping to make a change—space is limited and moves aren’t guaranteed.

If you’re a current resident and need to leave campus housing, you can submit a request to be released from your housing contract.

To get started, go to your housing portal and find the “Petition for Release” form under “My Forms” on the left side.
