To have a hold released, you should contact the department that placed the hold.

On this page you will find a list of common holds. If you have a hold not listed, please contact the Office of the Registrar for assistance.

 

Common Holds

Bursar’s Office Hold (Student Accounts)

This hold means you have a balance on your account.

If you owe $1,000 or less, you can still register for interim or spring classes.

For all other terms, your balance must be $200 or less to register.

To clear the hold or talk through your options, contact the Bursar’s Office at 970-351-4862 — they’re here to help!

UNC Student Health Center is missing required immunization records.

Proof of immunization is required for taking courses at UNC. Please contact the University Health Clinic at 970-351-1919 to resolve this hold.

This hold is placed when your GPA falls below 2.0.

To release this hold, you must contact your academic advisor.

This hold is placed when you are academically suspended.

Please contact Student Academic Success at 970-351-1411 or by email at probation@unco.edu to learn about your options.

This hold shows up if you’ve completed 30 or more credits and haven’t declared a major yet.

To clear it:

*Submit a Major/Minor Change Form
AND
*Get approval from your new academic program

This hold is for an expired catalog.

Please contact your advisor to complete a Major/Minor change form to update your record to an active catalog.

This hold is placed on all student-athletes at UNC.

The hold requires students to contact their Student Athlete Academic Advisor before adding or dropping courses.

This hold has been placed by Community Standards & Conflict Resolution.

Contact CSCM at 970-351-2001 for information about your specific hold.

This hold has been placed by the CARE Team.

Students can contact their case manager directly, or the Dean of Students office at 970-351-2001, to learn more about how to resolve the hold.

Common Registration Error Messages

We’ve put together a list of common registration errors and restrictions to help you move forward with confidence.

Some messages can be resolved with an instructor override — just email the instructor directly to ask for help.

Tip: UNC email addresses usually follow this format: firstname.lastname@unco.edu

You’ve got this — and we’re here if you need support!

Students register based on the number of completed units and by level. If you receive this message, you are trying to register before your designated registration date. View the Registration Schedule to determine your designated registration time slot.

This message means your student record is currently inactive, which blocks registration.

Contact the Office of the Registrar to find out the best way to reactivate your account and get back on track.

There’s a hold on your account that’s blocking registration — including adding, dropping, or withdrawing from classes.

To fix it:
Contact the office that placed the hold (you’ll usually see this listed in your student portal).

If you’re unable to resolve the hold but need to drop or withdraw from a course, reach out to the Office of the Registrar for help. We’ll work with you to find a solution.

Section Restrictions

Registration limited to a specific campus program. Subject to program, department, or instructor approval.

Registration is restricted to a specific student program.

Registration is restricted to specific class level(s) i.e. Juniors or Seniors. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

Course registration is restricted to a specific college. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

Registration limited to specific student cohort. Subject to program, department, or instructor approval.

Course registration is restricted to specific Major and Minor only. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

Undergraduate student attempting to register for a graduate-level course.

Must meet all prerequisites of the course to register. See Catalog for course prerequisites. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

Course is full. Add to Waitlist if available or contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

A co-requisite course must be registered for at the same time. Co-req course must be added at the same time before hitting acknowledge/submit. (Ex. Comm 100 and 103)

Attempting to register for the same course twice. Cannot register for a section more than once.

This error pops up when you try to register for a class that’s considered equivalent to one you’ve already taken or are currently enrolled in.

Equivalent courses have overlapping or identical content, and students can only earn degree credit for one of them.

Instructor consent is needed to enter the course. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.

You’ve attempted to register for more than 18 hours (undergraduates) or 17 hours (graduate students). An Overload Request Form (Graduate or Undergraduate) is required.

Time conflict with another course on your schedule. Contact the instructor of record for permission to enter the class. A faculty override will be needed.
