Minor Overview

The Sport Coaching Minor is for students who want to work with athletes of all ages in competitive sport. The program builds your coaching knowledge through theory, practice and hands-on application in coursework and internship opportunities.

Students in any major can pursue a minor in Sport Coaching. It’s a strong fit for students in Kinesiology-related fields, and also a popular choice for education majors who want to coach while teaching.

The Sport Coaching Minor at UNC requires 19-20 credits, including:

  • Core Coaching Courses (9 credits): Build your foundation in coaching principles and in coaching athletes across different ages and skill levels, from youth sport to high-performance competition.
  • Sport and Exercise Behavior (3 credits): Choose a course in the social or psychological side of sport, exploring how coaches influence athlete behavior and performance.
  • Sport-Specific Coaching and Officiating (2 credits): Choose a sport — baseball, basketball, football, soccer, track and field or volleyball — to build hands-on coaching and officiating skills.
  • Coaching Elective (3-4 credits): Choose an additional course in adapted physical activity, sport psychology or sport and exercise behavior.
  • Coaching Internship (2 credits): Apply your skills in a real coaching setting through a supervised internship.

Students must provide documentation of current First Aid and CPR certification.
