Program Overview
The Criminal Justice Bachelor of Arts program at UNC is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of crime, the criminal justice system and society.
You gain the knowledge and skills to articulate and demonstrate:
- How criminological theories inform policy
- How research guides system review and decision-making
- How ethics and cultural awareness promote visionary leadership in the criminal justice system
It’s learning by doing, with the expert guidance of dedicated, caring faculty who include lawyers, sociologists, criminologists, public policy experts and former detectives.
When you graduate, your degree from this highly regarded program will stand out to public, private and nonprofit organizations across the region.
The B.A. in Criminology & Criminal Justice requires 120 credits:
- Liberal arts curriculum: 31 credits
- Required major: 40 credits
- Major electives: 6 credits
- University-wide courses: 49 credits
The 18-credit minor provides a strong background in criminal justice and is a valuable addition to a variety of majors at UNC.

Criminology & Criminal Justice
In the last 20 years, criminology and criminal justice have shifted significantly. Changes include how police operate, the punishment for crimes, and support for victims. UNC offers a Bachelor of Arts and a minor in Criminology and Criminal Justice for undergraduate students. For graduate students, there is a Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
