Program Overview

At UNC, you have the opportunity to tailor your Asian Studies degree to fit your specific career and personal interests through elective courses, minors and expansive study abroad options.

Through majoring in Asian Studies, you gain proficiency in one or more Asian languages and develop an understanding of Asian civilizations from past to present. In addition to studying Asian languages and history, you can choose from a range of courses in political science, art history, anthropology, women’s studies, film, geography, literature and philosophy.

  • With your 57 major credits, increase your cultural competency and familiarity with Asia and understand how various cultures affect its current dynamics.
  • You may choose more than one language to explore, but you must express intermediate level proficiency in one language by the end of your program with 24 language credits.
  • You can take classes like Chinese Cinema, Japanese Literature, Gender in the Contemporary Global Order and Asian Musical Culture.

Asian Studies – Degree Requirements

Asian Studies: This 21-credit minor gives you a broad understanding of Asian culture through studying language, history, philosophy, art, geography or political science. Meet with an advisor to have this meet your needs.

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond your degree, you can expand your horizons by studying abroad or joining a club on campus.

Work with the Office of Global Engagement to see what program is a good fit for you and lets you explore a completely different part of the world!

Chinese Culture Club

At UNC, Chinese Culture Club works to blend cultural education with hands-on experiences, hosting events like mahjong, tai chi, tea ceremonies and more. This club is also a great avenue to practice Chinese outside of the classroom with your fellow Bears!  

Be a part of the on-campus Japanese community by joining the Japanese Language Club. Everyone is welcome! Improve speaking and listening skills by participating in regular kaiwa (conversation) groups. Meet native speakers and explore various topics, including reading, writing, culture, arts, history, literature, film and many other topics relating to Japan.

World Languages & Cultures

The Department of World Languages and Cultures has courses in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. Students work on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They also learn about the literature and culture tied to each language. Students can earn a B.A. in Foreign Languages, concentrating on Spanish. They may choose between a liberal arts emphasis and a K-12 teaching emphasis. Students may opt for a major or minor in Asian Studies. They can explore a variety of courses covering Asian history and cultures. Additionally, they can enroll in Japanese and/or Chinese language courses. All three languages are also offered as minors.
