Beaming Under New Lights

Fans, students and the Bear community packed Nottingham Field on Aug. 28, as the Northern Colorado Football team hosted Weber State in the season opener. It was the most-attended game since 2021, with 5,715 in attendance. And even though the matchup came down to the wire, with Weber State clinching the win by one point, the night was historic.

The student-athletes wore black football jerseys for the first time; the student section matched, creating a blackout atmosphere in the bleachers, and Nottingham Field lit up thanks to new permanent lights.

This was the first time a UNC football game was held at 7 p.m. at Nottingham and the community excitement was radiant.

“It was the very best environment I’ve been a part of,” said Head Coach Ed Lamb. “We’ve not had a crowd like that or fan interaction like we had tonight. They were really into the game.”

The excitement began before kickoff, when fans, families, alumni and the Northern Colorado community enjoyed tailgating, which included live music, local vendors and games. The event was held in collaboration with Downtown Greeley and built the electric energy before everyone made their way into Nottingham Field.

The $1.6 million permanent lighting project was funded entirely through private philanthropy and sponsorship revenue — a testament to the generous and strong support for UNC Athletics.

The football team will return to Nottingham Field on Saturday, Sept. 5, to host South Dakota at 6 p.m.
