To help students get better at learning languages and understanding other cultures, the World Languages and Cultures Department offers exchange programs in places like China, Japan, Taiwan Canada, Germany, and France. These programs are open to all UNC students, whether you’re majoring or minoring in a language or not. You can choose to study for a summer, a semester, a full school year, or join a short trip led by UNC teachers. Some of these programs might event cost less than a semester at UNC!
M.A. in Foreign Language
Founded in 1218, the University of Salamanca is one of the three oldest universities in the world. Over the centuries, it has drawn some of the greatest thinkers to its classroom, including Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quijote. Today, the university enrolls over 30,000 students each year and awards more than 200 doctoral degrees.
Asian Studies
Along with studying Chinese in China or Taiwan, and Japanese in Japan, students can also start learning Korean in South Korea or Thai in Thailand at one of our partner schools. They can also take other classes taught in English that count toward the Asian Studies major.
Chinese
The best way to get better at a language is to live in a place where people speak it – especially if it’s affordable! UNC has several exchange and study-abroad programs. At Shaanxi Normal University and National Taiwan Normal University, students can take part in a true exchange. This means they stay enrolled at UNC and pay UNC tuition, but they go to classes at one of these schools in another country.
Japanese
UNC students can study in Japan during the Summer, for one semester, or for a full year. This amazing chance lets students learn by being fully surrounded by the language, make new friends, and improve their Japanese skills. Our partner school, Aoyama Gakuin University, is in Shibuya – a busy and exciting part of Tokyo. It offers many ways for students to experience Japanese culture and daily life.
