Intern Stipend and Benefits

Interns are currently paid $32,700 for full-time work during the internship year. The internship will start on July 22nd, 2024.

Benefits

As a university employee, interns receive excellent benefits, including:

  • Health insurance (with a generous employer contribution)
  • Vacation time
  • Sick leave
  • Retirement contributions
  • Dissertation time (1 hour per week on average, with more extensive time allotted over the semester break and during the summer)
  • Professional development time is also provided (up to 4 days per year) for attending conferences, job search interviews and/or dissertation committee meetings.
  • UNC employees are eligible for EAP benefits of up to 10 counseling sessions annually. Counseling Center staff members (including doctoral interns) are supported in using this benefit through community-based providers.
  • Doctoral interns that meet the Colorado FAMLI requirements would be able to apply for family leave through the State of Colorado. Specific policies and practices are still forthcoming as legislation was just recently passed. More information will be provided on this process, likely available prior to the start of the 2024-25 training year.

Insurance

Interns are entitled to a full range of medical and insurance plans available to all exempt staff working on campus. This includes:

  • Major medical
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Long-term disability
  • Life insurance

Professional Development

As part of our commitment to life-long learning and growth, our staff participates in professional development throughout the year.  Our interns are invited to participate in the various trainings offered on campus, as well as professional development opportunities offered externally.  Historically, our center has been able to cover the registration fees of our staff, including interns.  Examples of professional development opportunities extended to interns in the past include:

  • QPR Suicide Prevention
  • CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality) training
  • UNITE Trainings at UNC
  • Trauma Informed Care training
  • Unconscious Bias training
  • Working with Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • AOD Assessment training

Office Space

The Center provides interns with private, fully furnished offices. Each office is equipped with a computer with the Microsoft 365 software and the Titanium scheduling package. Web cams are installed in each trainee office to allow for digital recordings of client sessions.

Bear Card and Parking

Interns receive a staff I.D. card which allows them to use the UNC library and check out materials for an extended length of time. Free, on-street parking is available near the center and throughout campus. Interns are also able to purchase a Faculty parking sticker, which allows for parking elsewhere on campus.  Many of our interns choose to forgo buying a parking sticker due to the parking around the center.
