Internship Program Admissions

Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

We are looking for individuals who are culturally-sensitive, flexible, motivated, eager to learn and grow, and share our passion for working with a diverse college population. Successful applicants commonly have prior college counseling experience and have an interest in broadening their clinical skills and knowledge in providing outreach, consultation, supervision, as well as individual and group counseling services.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic (and adjusted October 1st timeframe for hour reporting) on applicants accruing clinical hours, applications with less than 500 hours will be considered as long as all other requirements are met.

Describe any other required minimum criteria used to screen applicants:

  1.  Applicants must be enrolled in an APA-Accredited graduate program in clinical or counseling psychology and must be in good standing with their academic program.  
  2.  A minimum of 500 intervention hours must include at least 100 hours of individual therapy with adults by the application deadline (NOTE: As encouraged by APPIC, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the change to October 1st for hours accrual reporting, applications with less than 500 hours will be considered as long as all other requirements are met).
  3.  Comprehensive exams passed by the application deadline
  4.  Prior to the start of the internship year, interns are required to have completed all coursework and defended their dissertation proposal. 
  5. An ability to pass a criminal  and educational background check

Other Benefits: 

Interns receive a staff ID card which allows them to use the UNC library. Interns are also permitted to purchase a faculty/staff parking permit which allows for parking adjacent to Cassidy Hall. Free on-street parking is also available near the counseling center.
