What Is the Liberal Arts Curriculum?
Welcome to General Education at UNC
At the University of Northern Colorado, the general education courses assembled in the Liberal Arts Curriculum are designed to provide the opportunity for all students, regardless of major field of study, to practice and develop skills sets and ways of thinking foundational to a wide range of professional career paths and preparatory for life in a democracy and freedom-oriented society within an interconnected world.
As a student-first university, UNC’s Liberal Arts Curriculum streamlines the requirements in order to reduce time to degree completion while retaining a meaningful and individually engaging learning experience for all students. This curriculum accommodates the CDHE’s, Colorado Department of Higher Education, general education requirements and maintains UNC’s commitment to Multicultural and International Studies. All courses in UNC’s LAC are aligned with Colorado’s Guaranteed Transfer Pathways and are integrated with State Articulation Agreements.

How Does This Benefit Me?
The skills and ways of thinking students acquire in their general education/liberal arts courses are highly valued by employers and are essential for societal vitality and an engaged citizenry in democracy. Completing a program of liberal arts/general education provides students with broad skills, building the foundation for deepening their understanding and honing their cognitive skills within majors. A liberal arts/general education situates students for the development of long-term careers, for greater success in graduate and professional school, and for ongoing personal growth.
Specifically, employers value the cognitive skills and dispositions a liberal arts/general education provides such as the ability to think critically, to communicate clearly, and to solve complex problems. Also valued are the abilities to be able to work effectively as part of a team, to engage in organizational innovation, to act with ethical judgment and integrity, and to demonstrate intercultural skills as well as the capacity for ongoing learning. These skills, and their ability to deepen discipline-specific knowledge, are viewed as fundamentally necessary for professional success. A liberal arts/general education that provides students with skills in written and oral communication, critical and creative thinking, quantitative and digital literacy, along with the ability to locate, evaluate, and apply information aligns student learning with the needs of the modern workforce.

Transferring to UNC Made Easy
Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (gtP)
All UNC Liberal Arts Curriculum courses are part of the GT Pathways Program, approved by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE). That means if you earn a C- or better, these classes will transfer to any public college or university in Colorado and count toward general education requirements for most associate or bachelor’s degrees in liberal arts or science.
Statewide Transfer Articulation Agreements
Statewide Transfer Articulation Agreements (STAAs) are agreements between the public two-year and four-year colleges and universities in the State of Colorado. These agreements indicate how courses from the two-year colleges will transfer to four-year colleges/universities as part of a particular bachelor’s degree program. These agreements allow students to graduate from a community college with a 60-credit Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree, enroll with junior status at a four-year college or university, and complete the bachelor’s degree in no more than an additional 60 credits (for a total of 120 credits).
