These are some of the current issues going on throughout the Univeristy. Included is an explanation by the GSA President. Please email the President (gsa@unco.edu) with your thoughts on any of these issues. GSA acts as your voice and does have a say in these issues. How the graduate students feel about these issues is needed in shaping that voice.
Current University Issues Involving Graduate Students
GSA Grant Funding Process
At the latest GSA council meeting, the GSA president as well as the college representatives voted in favor of making some changes to the GSA grant process. These changes will take effect at the start of the new fiscal year, July 1, 2011. First, GSA has set application deadline dates for earlier in the semester when compared to previous years. The purpose behind this decision was to provide applicants with a decision regarding funding earlier on in the semester so they can plan accordingly. Also, a current course schedule was added to the list of required materials for both research and conference grant applicants. GSA requires that each applicant is currently enrolled in a graduate program at UNC so this will be used for verification purposes. Additionally, individuals who are applying for a research grant will be asked to list a potential return date for all tangible materials purchased with GSA funds. GSA has always been responsible for collecting tangible materials purchased with GSA funds. In the past, the responsibility has been left solely up to the applicant and as a result, not all materials have been returned to GSA. This information will allow GSA to better distribute grant funding and reduce the likelihood of double purchasing equipment. Lastly, the GSA handbook states “If an applicant has completed less than 18 graduate credits, they must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits to be eligible for funding.” The GSA council decided that this is a bit unrealistic for the changing UNC graduate student demographic and as a result decided to lower the current credit requirement to 6 credits if you have completed less than 18 graduate credits.
All of these changes have been listed on the GSA website www.unco.edu/gsa. New application forms as well as an updated handbook have been posted. These changes will take effect immediately. No old grant applications will be accepted so make sure to submit the current application. Even if you have received a conference or research grant from GSA, please be aware of these changes. If all of the materials are not present with a submitted grant application, the applicant will not be eligible for funding, no exceptions.
