Program Overview
Take the next step in your career with UNC’s master’s degree in school counseling as you gain valuable, real-world counseling experience working in community schools (K-12) through our 600-hour internship program. Work closely with top faculty with professional counseling experience in small classes that include doctoral student supervisors. You’ll be eligible to become a nationally certified counselor when you graduate.
This program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), enabling you to become a nationally certified counselor when you graduate and ensuring that foundational academic requirements are met for licensure across the nation.
Innovative Training, Flexible Options
Whether you are a working professional or a full-time graduate student, we have an option to fit your needs.
Traditional On-Campus Delivery (Greeley): Immerse yourself in a traditional graduate student experience, which includes our state-of-the-art Psychological Services Clinic. Take weekday courses in a semester-long format.
Weekend Delivery (Denver or Greeley): We also offer this master’s program in a weekend delivery at our Denver Center and on the Greeley Campus. Classes are delivered in an intensive weekend format designed specifically for working professionals. Students take one class at a time over two weekends, allowing you to work full time.
Complete your master’s degree with 63 total credits, including elective options that can help you meet certificate and licensure requirements.
Students pursuing Colorado licensure must pass the required proficiency examinations. For more information, contact the Teaching/Special Services Licensing Office.

Applicants who submit applications past the deadline need to speak to the department. Applications are pre-screened by the department. Selected applicants are invited to pre-admission workshop where evaluation processes are involved.
Weekend Delivery (Denver or Greeley):
Applications will not be reviewed for admission until all application materials are received and a pre-admission workshop is attended (see below). If you will not have your other application materials complete before the workshop, please contact the Program Coordinator.
Attend a Pre-Admission Workshop: Three online workshops are offered each year, generally in Feb./March, May and Sept./Oct. Exact dates will be available to schedule during the supplemental items phase of the application process.
Denver Weekend Program: You can begin the Denver Center at Lowry program any term once you are admitted.
You will need to have your application submitted (preferably including your supplemental items) in time to register for a pre-admission workshop that is offered prior to the term in which you intend to start the program.
Greeley Weekend Program: Accepted applicants for the Greeley weekend program delivery may begin the program each Fall term.
Three Denver-Based Courses: Three courses of this program are only offered at our Denver Center. Students will only need to travel to Denver for six weekends during the program to complete these courses.
Priority Application Deadline: March 1. We recommend that you complete your application and supplemental materials by this date.
Standard Application Deadline: April 15. If space is available, additional applicants will be considered until this date. Please contact the Program Coordinator about available space if the priority deadline has passed.

Professional Licensure
UNC’s professional licensure programs are designed to lead to Colorado licensure.
Each state sets their own requirements, so a UNC program might not lead to licensure in other states.
