Program Overview

UNC music education students are thoroughly trained in the discipline of music and fully prepared in the art of teaching.

Majoring in Music Education combines music theory, individual instruction to grow your skills as a musician and education classes to mold you into a talented music teacher. When you graduate, you’ll be a licensed Colorado music teacher. Our faculty includes specialists in choral, instrumental, and general music, with extensive experience as public school teachers.

When you major in Music Education, your education consists of a few parts. You’ll start with typical music major classes like private instruction and ensemble performance, then move into the Professional Teacher Education Program (PTEP) coursework. As you grow as a musician and teacher, you’ll work alongside public school teachers and their students.

A public recital and student teaching will round out your upperclassmen education, preparing you for graduation.

Music Education – Degree Requirements

A four-year plan is a tool that helps you see what classes you will take to graduate in four years.

Courses are subject to availability. Students must consult with their major advisor to receive information on any additional graduation requirements and course sequence guidance.

After You Apply

After you apply to UNC, you’ll audition for our Music Education program. You will audition for your primary instrument or voice studio and also attend an interview with the music education faculty.

What is Licensure?

A teaching license is Colorado’s way of certifying you’re qualified to teach. It shows you’ve completed the required coursework, passed state exams and gained classroom experience. Think of it like a driver’s license, but for teaching.

Our Music Education program includes everything you need for K-12 licensure. When you graduate, you’ll be ready to apply for your Colorado Initial Teacher License and start your teaching career.
