Minor Overview
Media plays a central role in how we understand the world. With UNC’s Media Studies minor, you’ll learn to analyze, evaluate and interpret the messages we encounter every day through TV, film, news, social media and more. You’ll explore the history of media, its influence on society and the debates around freedom of speech, politics and pop culture.
This 18-credit program is a strong option for students in many majors, including political science, education, sociology, psychology and performing and visual arts. You’ll build skills in critical thinking, communication and analysis while working closely with supportive faculty who bring real-world media experience into the classroom. By studying how media shapes culture and society, you’ll gain a flexible set of tools that can enhance your academic path and prepare you for a wide range of careers.

The Media Studies minor at UNC requires 18 credits, including:
- Core Courses (6 credits)
- Electives (12 credits)
Credits must be chosen with consent of the student’s advisor. Students must complete 50 percent of their coursework at the 300 or 400 level. Students work with an advisor each semester to plan their coursework.

Communication and Journalism
Students in Communication Studies learn how people talk and share ideas with others in different situations, like with family, friends, at work, in government, and with people from other cultures.
Journalism & Media Studies teaches students how media is changing and helps them get ready to do well in the future. As a student majoring in Journalism and Media Studies, you will learn how to write, record, edit, and create content for newspapers, tv, social media, and websites.
