Why Licensure Varies by State
Some states have one agency that handles many professions, while others have separate boards for each one (like teaching, nursing)
Some professions have different rules based on where you work. For example, working in a K-12 school may require a separate license.
Students from out-of-state may need to meet extra requirements when applying for licensure, especially if completing learning placements.

In many states, one board oversees both clinical mental health counseling and marriage, couples, and family counseling/therapy. When a state uses a separate board or a separate webpage for each counseling area, we note that below.
When a state requires a supervisor license or approval, it is handled by the same board for that profession. Rehabilitation counseling is regulated by the same board as mental health counseling in all states, and school counseling is usually licensed through the state’s educator licensing agency. In every state, working in K–12 schools usually requires a state license or certificate from the education department or educator licensing board. Some school-based roles—such as school counseling, school psychology, educational interpreting, speech-language pathology, audiology, and nursing—may also need a separate license from a health or professional board.
