iClicker

iClicker is a classroom response system that lets students participate in lectures using their phones, laptops, or physical clicker devices. Professors use it to ask questions during class, and students respond in real time.

Why Do We Use It?

  • Engagement: It keeps lectures interactive.
  • Attendance: Some instructors use it to track who’s present.
  • Instant Feedback: You can see how well you understand the material right away.
  • Participation Points: Many classes give credit just for responding.

How It Works

  • Download the iClicker app or go to the iClicker website.
  • Create an account and join your class using the course code.
  • During class, your instructor will ask questions.
  • You respond using your device.
  • Your answers are recorded and may count toward your grade.

Before you begin the registration process for your iClicker remote, check with your instructor for any instructions specific to their course, and ensure that you know which devices will be allowed in class. Each course might be using iClicker differently, so it is important to follow the registration instructions provided by each instructor.

How to Register Your iClicker Remote for iClicker Cloud Courses

Follow these steps to register your iClicker remote for iClicker Cloud courses:

  1. You must create a free iClicker student app account to ensure that your grades appear in your instructor’s iClicker gradebook. You can do this by downloading the mobile app via the App Store or Google Play, or by visiting the iClicker student web app. Check your instructor’s directions to see if they require you to include a certain type of student ID or email address in your iClicker student account.
  2. Register the 8-digit remote ID from the back of your iClicker remote. You can do this upon creating your iClicker student account or at any other time through your account profile.
    1. If you are registering a remote for the first time, you will also receive a message that you have activated your five-year digital subscription, included at no extra cost with all new, unregistered iClicker remotes. This gives you the flexibility to participate in iClicker sessions with your mobile device, tablet, or laptop in addition to your iClicker remote
    2. If you do not see a digital subscription message, it means your remote has been previously registered in the iClicker student app. You will not need to pay for an iClicker student app subscription if you are using only your iClicker remote to participate in class, and you can ignore the “Buy” button and free trial expiration message that will appear in your iClicker student app account. If you do wish to use the iClicker student app to participate in class, you would have to purchase a subscription or obtain an access code before the two-week free trial period is over.
  3. After registering your remote in the iClicker student app, be sure to also add your instructor’s course. This will ensure your iClicker points appear correctly in your instructor’s gradebook.
  4. You might also need to register your iClicker student app account in your Learning Management System. Check your instructor’s directions to determine if this scenario is relevant for your course.

When instructors change the iClicker base frequency to something other than the default (AA), students will receive a “Closed” message on their remote screens if they are on the wrong frequency. Both students and instructors will need to reboot the remote frequency to match that of the base. Directions for changing the frequency are also on the back of every remote.

Note: The frequency on iClicker remotes cannot be changed unless there is an active polling session. Therefore, instructors must start a session before the frequency can be updated.

Original iClicker remote:

  1. Press and hold the power button on the remote until the “Vote Status” light begins flashing.
  2. Use the A-E buttons to enter the two-letter frequency code. The A-E LEDs flash green indicating the frequency change was successful.

Both iClicker + and iClicker 2 remotes remember the last saved frequency.

There are a few steps to take to make sure you can successfully participate in Polling with your iClicker remote.

Register your remote

Registering your iClicker remote is required in Courses in order to identify you as the participant using the remote. If you do not register your remote, your instructor will only have your remote ID and not your name in the gradebook with your responses. If you register later, your name will still be associated with those past responses.

If you are participating in an Event or answering anonymous questions, you do not need to register your remote.

Respond to a polling question using an iClicker remote

Once the facilitator presents a polling question, you can use the buttons on your remote to enter your responses.

  1. Verify that the frequency code is set to the correct frequency code. If you are using an iClicker 2 remote, the frequency code briefly appears on the remote LCD when you power on the clicker. Your instructor will let you know the correct frequency for your course.
  2. Use your clicker to respond to a poll. On an iClicker 2 remote, your response appears on the LCD with a check mark to show that your response was received. On an iClicker+ remote, a green light indicates that your response was received.

Set the frequency code for an iClicker remote

The iClicker remote remembers the last saved frequency code. If you use the remote in only one class, it is not necessary to change the frequency again. The frequency briefly appears on the LCD screen each time you power on the remote.

To change the code:

  1. Your instructor must start an iClicker session in class.
  2. Press and hold the Power button until either the LCD screen shows a flashing frequency code (iClicker 2) or until the Power light flashes green (iClicker+).
  3. Enter the desired frequency code using the clicker buttons.

A checkmark briefly appears on the iClicker 2 remote LCD indicating that you successfully reset the frequency code. On the iClicker+ remote, the A-E LEDs flash green indicating the frequency change was successful.

You can take a Quick Start Quiz using an iClicker 2 remote. Other iClicker remotes are not compatible with iClicker Cloud Quizzing.

Note: If your instructor has prepared this Quiz outside of class, you will not have the option to use a remote and will need to participate with the iClicker Student mobile or web app.

To take a Quiz using a remote, please follow these steps and review the diagram below:

  1. Press the orange Power button to turn on your remote and ensure you are on the correct frequency.
  2. Press the light blue Question Mode/Refresh button to ensure that you are in quizzing/self-paced polling mode.
  3. A large “1” appears with a frame around it, indicating the question number. The quizzing/self-paced polling icon also appears.
  4. Respond to each question using the answer buttons A-E, then press Send to confirm your answer. Next to the number of the question you should see a checkmark and underneath it you should see the answer you selected.
  5. Press the Up button on the cross-navigation to advance to the next question.
  6. Continue responding to each question until you have reached the end of the quiz.
  7. Use the Up and Down buttons to review your answers. Confirm that you see a checkmark next to each question number. You may change or re-send your answer to any question as long as polling is active.
