Research Expertise & Interests

Assessing and Meeting Genomics Content Competencies in Graduate Nursing Education

To discuss efforts of one Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) education program to evaluate the knowledge and retention of genomics content. Genomics content is threaded through the curriculum to meet the education competencies. Data sets of genomics knowledge of incoming graduate FNP cohorts will be assessed and compared to knowledge retention in their final year before graduation.

Graduate Advanced Physical Assessment; determining outcomes of learned skill performances by comparing two course delivery methods

The Advanced Physical Assessment course was changed to include allocated lab-time. The change allowed for front-loading of the didactic material along with hands-on practice during class-time and simulation with standardized patients. The following outcomes need to be evaluated:
1. To assess the preceptors and students perception of knowledge acquisition and confidence level of performing advanced physical assessment skills by comparing the old and new program evaluations.
2. FNP-students’ self-assessment of preparedness for their first live clinical rotation.
3. To evaluate if the new course delivery is equal or superior to the old course delivery by evaluating students and preceptor scores.

Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner On-Call high fidelity patient simulation involving telephone triage, medical management, and medical-legal aspects

Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner On-Call high fidelity patient simulation involving telephone triage, medical management, and medical-legal aspects.

The Role of In-person Simulation and Skills Intensives in the Education of Emergency Nurse Practitioners

Simulation is a highly effective pedagogy for teaching in both undergraduate Registered Nurse (RN) and graduate Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) programs (NONPF, 2022; NTF, 2022). Using simulation is especially helpful to increase APN competency around high-risk, low volume events they may not experience in their clinical settings··Simulation is an important way to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and application to practice for APNs
