Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL)
Office
CETL helps educators strengthen their teaching and support student success. We create spaces for collaborative learning through faculty learning communities, peer-to-peer engagement, and support from teaching coaches, along with resources on inclusive teaching, course design, and assessing learning. Our programs respond to current trends in higher education, including adopting high-impact practices and teaching with AI, and foster a campus culture that values and celebrates excellent teaching.

At CETL, we believe great teaching transforms lives. We’re here to support faculty and graduate students with the tools, connections, and inspiration to thrive as educators. Through workshops, events, and communities of practice, CETL helps UNC’s faculty grow their teaching skills, experiment with new approaches, and join a campus culture that celebrates teaching excellence.
What We Offer
- New Faculty Orientation & Development (NFOD): New faculty start their journey at UNC with a two-day, in-person orientation where they connect with colleagues, meet campus leaders, and join conversations about effective teaching. NFOD continues throughout the year with programs designed to help new faculty reflect, adapt, and grow as both teachers and scholars.
- Fall Webinar Series: Each fall, we host a timely series of webinars tackling today’s most pressing teaching topics. Past themes include teaching with AI, decolonizing the curriculum, and universal design for learning. Sessions are recorded and available through UNCOpen.
- Spring Challenge: A gamified, self-paced professional development experience. Participants complete “quests” to sharpen their teaching skills and earn prizes along the way.
- Teaching & Assessment Symposium: Our annual gathering brings UNC educators together to share innovative practices and celebrate excellence in teaching and the assessment of learning.
Teaching is more powerful when we learn together. CETL’s Learning Communities bring small groups of instructors and graduate students together around shared interests. These communities create a supportive space to exchange ideas, explore evidence-based practices, and connect across disciplines. Whether you’re new to teaching or highly experienced, you’ll find opportunities to grow and contribute. View current faculty learning communities and find information about enrollment.
- Teaching Coaches: Get one-on-one support from experienced faculty who understand the challenges of the classroom. Teaching Coaches offer personalized guidance on pedagogy, course design, and practical strategies. Meet UNC’s Teaching Coaches.
- Webinar Library: Access recordings and materials from past CETL workshops whenever you need inspiration or a refresher.
- Syllabus Statements: Save time with ready-to-use syllabus language for common policies and teaching topics.
- Teaching Toolkits: Practical, step-by-step resources on AI literacy, career readiness, course assessment, and more. Toolkits provide clear answers and classroom-ready strategies. UNC instructors can find the toolkits here. If you don’t have UNC login credentials and would like to view UNC’s teaching toolkits, contact cetl@unco.edu.
