November 2025

The November peer mentor newsletter contains information about spring registration, STEP 262, scholarship application, Praxis exam, and upcoming November events.

Prepare for Spring Registration!

Spring registration is approaching! Undergraduate registration opens on November 11th! Before registering, you MUST meet with your academic advisor (check Degree Works) to get your PIN for registration. You CAN NOT register without your PIN! Your date to register can also be found in URSA, in the Student tab under registration information. If you need any help for registration, you can ask the peer mentors, your advisor, Dr. Reiten, or Dr. Powers.

Registration Advice from Peers:

  • Register early! Classes can fill up quickly so it is important to register as soon as possible to get into the classes that you need!
  • Talk with your advisor as soon as you notice a problem. Sometimes classes are held at conflicting times and your advisor can work with you to determine the best course of action. For example, determining whether a substitution or rearranging your degree plan is needed.

STEP 262 in Spring ’26 or Spring ’27?

If you have taken or are currently taking STEP 161, you should have completed one of two surveys based on your plans for taking STEP 262 sent to you by Dr. Reiten. These forms were to be completed by October 31st. If you missed the emails, please complete the following survey today.

UNC Scholarship Application

UNC offers a wide variety of scholarship opportunities for which current students are eligible to apply. The scholarship application opens on November 1st this year and is due in February. Some scholarships have earlier application dates than others, so the earlier you apply the more opportunities you have to receive scholarships! (Note: Several scholarships are specifically offered for students majoring in mathematics or secondary teaching. That’s you!)

You have to reapply each year to be considered for new scholarships.

Praxis Information

  • To become licensed by the Colorado Department of Education, future teachers need to pass the appropriate Praxis exam. To send your scores to UNC, use the code 4074 when taking the exam. You are given 180 minutes (3 hours) to complete 66 questions (not all questions are scored the same). Each attempt costs $130 but you can take it as many times as necessary. You must have taken the Praxis before STEP 363 and passed before STEP 464 (Student Teaching).
  • Versions and Passing Scores
    • Secondary Math Teachers (6-12) need to take Praxis 5165 and get a score of 159 to pass
    • Middle School Math Teachers (6-8) need to take Praxis 5164 and get a score of 157 to pass
  • MOCK Praxis Tests!
    •  You peer mentors are organizing new scaled practice Praxis tests. On top of the 66-question practice tests, we will have a 1-hour version of the Middle School and Secondary tests. Stop by our mentoring hours to get a copy and talk about Praxis prep!
