Campus Announcement
President Feinstein shares a campus updating regarding the César Chávez Cultural Center
Fellow Bears,
Earlier this semester, I formed a task force to review the naming of the César Chávez Cultural Center considering recent media reports regarding allegations involving César Chávez. As I stated at that time, UNC condemns all forms of abuse, including sexual assault, and remains committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all members of our community.
The majority of the task force was comprised of current students with representation from faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, worked efficiently and thoughtfully to solicit campus-wide input. This included a community survey, focus groups, and engagement with key constituents. Last week, the task force submitted its recommendation regarding the name of the cultural center.
After careful consideration, I have agreed with their recommendation to remove César Chávez and have the center renamed La Casita Cultural Center. At the Board of Trustees meeting on June 12, I plan to formally request the removal of the name César Chávez.
If approved, physical signage, university websites, and other ancillary materials will be updated to reflect the change, and we will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new name when our community reconvenes in the fall semester.
I am grateful to the members of the task force for their dedication and care in navigating this difficult and important work. I also thank all members of our campus community who shared their perspectives and engaged in the process.
Sincerely,
Andy Feinstein
President
