Program Overview
Prepare for a rewarding career as a speech-language pathologist in UNC’s full-time, two-year M.A. program, built on a clinician-researcher framework and a strong foundation in evidence-based practice (EBP). The curriculum combines advanced coursework with hands-on clinical experiences in our public Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Clinic, where you’ll develop practical skills, learn professional practices, and engage in real-world patient care.
Students gain critical experience formulating clinical questions, evaluating research, collecting data, and presenting findings, preparing them to be confident, independent, and life-long learners. In addition to on-campus practica, the program includes two internships in public schools and medical facilities—locally or elsewhere—providing exposure to a wide range of patient populations and clinical settings.
This residential program requires full-time participation Monday through Friday, including classes, clinics, internships, and community engagement opportunities.
The Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology combines core coursework, clinical practica, internships, and optional thesis work to prepare students for careers as competent, evidence-based practitioners. Core courses (34 credits) cover topics from neuroanatomy and speech disorders to feeding, swallowing, and language development.
Students complete 10–14 credits of clinical practicum, gaining hands-on experience in the UNC Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Clinic and affiliated sites to meet ASHA clinical hour requirements. Additionally, 12–24 credits of internships in public schools and medical settings provide real-world training under professional supervision. Thesis option students can pursue 9 elective credits in research, reducing internship hours with advisor approval.
Graduates who pass the Praxis exam and clinical fellowship are eligible for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence and Colorado licensure.
Applicants to the Speech-Language Pathology M.S. program apply through the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS). To be considered, you must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Strong candidates typically have coursework in communication disorders and the sciences, including biology, chemistry, and anatomy/physiology.
The program does not require GRE scores. Applicants submit official transcripts and three letters of recommendation via CSDCAS, and international applicants follow additional requirements for transcripts, English proficiency, and documentation. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate School and program faculty, with admission decisions typically released by mid-March.
The program assumes an undergraduate background in speech-language pathology and/or audiology. Students who do not have such a background must fulfill academic requirements as determined by their major advisor. These requirements must be met before admission to the graduate program.
