Minor Overview
The Japanese Minor helps students build language proficiency and cultural understanding while exploring Japan’s history and contemporary society. It enhances communication skills and global perspectives valuable to multiple majors and career paths.
You can study Japanese at UNC from elementary to advanced levels, and supplement your studies with one of several exchange and study-abroad opportunities. When you combine your language study with other fields such as business, political science, international trade and relations, economics, or anthropology, you can pursue careers in international business, world affairs and government, translation, social work or the arts.
This 21-credit minor begins with 12 credits of foundational language study, followed by a culture course and advanced-level Japanese coursework. Through these courses, students build strong language proficiency and deepen their cultural understanding.

They may choose between a liberal arts emphasis and a K-12 teaching emphasis. Students may opt for a major or minor in Asian Studies. They can explore a variety of courses covering Asian history and cultures. Additionally, they can enroll in Japanese and/or Chinese language courses. All three languages are also offered as minors.
