The University of Northern Colorado’s Master of Arts in History gives you the skills and credentials to advance your teaching career, pursue doctoral studies or open doors in museums, libraries, law and beyond.
Master Advanced Research Skills
Learn to dig deep into historical sources and uncover stories that matter. You’ll gain research techniques used by professional historians and scholars.
Become a Stronger Writer
Polish your ability to explain complex ideas clearly. You’ll write papers that analyze events, argue persuasively and engage readers.
Think Critically About the Past
Understand how historical events connect to today’s world. Examine social change, explore different perspectives and learn what really drives history forward.
You’ll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (or equivalent foreign degree)
- 3.0 GPA or higher on your most recent completed degree (or current degree in progress)
- If you’ve completed a master’s degree or 18+ graduate credits, your graduate GPA will be used
- If you’re still finishing your bachelor’s, you must submit your final official transcript in your first semester
- Applicants with a final GPA below 3.0 may be assigned additional program requirements
Application Materials:
- Completed online application ($50 fee waived for UNC students and alumni)
- Official transcripts from your bachelor’s degree institution
- Three letters of recommendation
- Personal statement explaining your interest in graduate school
- Writing sample showing your research and analysis skills
Good News: No GRE required!
30 total credits required for graduation:
- Core courses: 9 credit hours
- Elective courses: 21 credit hours
- Final project: Completed through two research essays in the Writing Seminar (HIST 690)
