Program Overview
The MA in Foreign Languages prepares secondary Spanish teachers to excel in the classroom through deep study of Hispanic civilization, culture, language, linguistics, literature and the latest teaching methodologies.
Our program is designed with working educators in mind. You can complete your degree in three consecutive summers on the Greeley campus or accelerate your timeline by combining academic year courses with summer sessions. Each summer consists of an intensive program of coursework in literature, civilization and culture and advanced language or pedagogy.
After on-campus sessions, you’ll complete coursework and submit assignments electronically, giving you flexibility to balance your studies with your professional life.
The curriculum follows a three-year cycle featuring Spain, Latin America and Mexico/Hispanic United States, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the Spanish-speaking world. All candidates must attend at least one summer session on campus.
You’ll need a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a minimum 3.00 GPA to apply. The application process includes:
- Completed online application with fee ($50 domestic, $60 international)
- Official transcripts from all institutions where bachelor’s or higher degrees were earned
- Three letters of recommendation
Application Deadlines:
- Fall and Spring: Rolling admissions
- Summer: April 15
Important to know: This program is primarily offered in summer, with select academic year courses available. All students complete at least one summer session on campus.
This program does not grant initial teaching licensure — if you’re seeking your first teaching license, you might consider:

The MA in Foreign Languages requires 30-36 credit hours of graduate coursework focusing on:
- Advanced Spanish language proficiency (listening, reading, speaking, writing)
- Hispanic civilization and culture
- Spanish and Latin American literature
- Linguistics and language acquisition theory
- Current pedagogical methodologies for secondary education
You will follow a carefully sequenced curriculum that rotates through regional emphases each year. You’ll develop expertise in teaching while deepening your understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.
Our curriculum develops both your expertise in Spanish and your teaching effectiveness. You will:
- Achieve advanced proficiency in all four language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing
- Explore the rich diversity of Hispanic civilization, from Peninsular Spain to Latin America to Hispanic communities in the United States
- Analyze Spanish and Latin American literature across genres and time periods
- Study linguistics and language acquisition theory to understand how students learn languages
- Master current methodologies for teaching Spanish in secondary schools
- Apply research-based practices to real-world teaching challenges

Spanish Teaching Concentration
Focus your studies on secondary education with our Spanish Teaching concentration. Designed to deepen a teacher’s knowledge of the Spanish language, literature and culture, our MA program will equip you with advanced pedagogical skills for teaching Spanish in K-12 settings.

During the Spanish Peninsular rotation year, you can earn up to nine credit hours through our summer Study Abroad program in Salamanca, Spain—one of the world’s most historic university cities.

World Languages & Cultures
The Department of World Languages and Cultures has courses in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. Students work on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They also learn about the literature and culture tied to each language. Students can earn a B.A. in Foreign Languages, concentrating on Spanish. They may choose between a liberal arts emphasis and a K-12 teaching emphasis. Students may opt for a major or minor in Asian Studies. They can explore a variety of courses covering Asian history and cultures. Additionally, they can enroll in Japanese and/or Chinese language courses. All three languages are also offered as minors.
