Ready to make a profound difference in people’s lives? The Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program at UNC prepares you to guide individuals, couples and families through their most challenging moments—and help them build healthier, more fulfilling futures.
Our program combines rigorous academic coursework with extensive hands-on clinical practice and supervised field experience. You’ll develop advanced counseling skills, master evidence-based interventions and build the ethical foundation essential for professional practice.
By graduation, you’ll be prepared to meet clients where they are and provide the compassionate, effective care they need.

The 60-credit curriculum includes core courses, clinical training, and electives that build advanced professional competence. Elective credits may be needed to meet certificate and/or certification requirements.

Clinical experience:
- Practicum: One semester of supervised counseling practice
- Internship: Two semesters in community or clinical placements
Ready to apply? Here’s what you need to get started with our Clinical Mental Health Counseling M.A. program:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- 3.0 GPA minimum (based on your most recent degree)
- Three letters of recommendation (academic or professional)
- Attend a pre-admission workshop (offered online 3 times per year)
- GRE scores (only required if your GPA is below 3.0)
- Two years of work experience (recommended)
Application Deadlines:
- Greeley: December 1 for Fall/Summer start
- Denver: Rolling admissions
- Loveland: March 1 (priority) / April 15 (standard) for Fall start
The Graduate programs in Counseling at UNC have a long history of accreditation. The Counseling programs (Professional Counseling and Counselor Education and Supervision) in the Department of Applied Psychology and Counselor Education (APCE) are accredited with CACREP.
Graduates are eligible for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure in Colorado and most U.S. states. Licensure requirements vary by state.
