Program Overview
The Master in Biomedical Science (MBS) at UNC is designed to strengthen your application to medical, dental, veterinary or other health professional schools. This intensive one-year program helps you showcase your academic abilities through rigorous graduate-level coursework in the biomedical sciences.
Our program stands out for its small class size, personalized attention from faculty and proven track record of success. Students form a tight-knit, supportive learning community where collaboration—not competition—helps everyone succeed.
This program works for students who want to demonstrate high-level academic achievement, improve their professional school applications or pursue careers in clinical research, university teaching or other biomedical fields.
Flexible Delivery
Choose on-campus or fully online delivery. Both options offer the same high-quality education and rigorous coursework that strengthens your professional school applications.
The MBS program requires 30 credits completed over two semesters. Your program includes required core courses and elective courses that you can choose based on your professional goals.
Comprehensive Examination
To graduate from the program, you must pass a comprehensive examination covering material from the core courses. This exam demonstrates your mastery of the biomedical sciences content.
You’ll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (or equivalent foreign degree)
- 3.0 GPA or higher on your most recent completed degree (or current degree in progress)
- If you’ve completed a master’s degree or 18+ graduate credits, your graduate GPA will be used
- If you’re still finishing your bachelor’s, you must submit your final official transcript in your first semester
- Applicants with a final GPA below 3.0 may be assigned additional program requirements
Application Materials:
- Completed online application ($50 fee waived for UNC students and alumni)
- Official transcripts from your bachelor’s degree institution
- Three letters of recommendation
- Submit official scores from at least one standardized test (MCAT, GRE, etc).
- Personal statement explaining your interest in graduate school
- Writing sample showing your research and analysis skills

Biological Sciences
Biology is the study of life. Where did the first organisms come from and how has life changed over millennia? How do we function as individuals – what makes us respond differently to temperature or disease? Biology seeks to understand how organisms function in a changing environment.
