Kick off your UNC experience in January with Spring Start Orientation & Winter Welcome Kick-Off! During this weekend you will have the chance to connect with other new Bears, learn about campus resources, and start building your UNC community. In this smaller, close-knit setting, you’ll leave feeling prepared, supported, and ready for a successful semester.

NSO vs. Winter Welcome Kick-Off – What’s the Difference?

New Student Orientation (NSO)

Your introduction to UNC. Spring NSO happens the Friday before classes begin. You’ll meet staff and students, get important information, and feel prepared to start strong on day one.

Winter Welcome Kick-Off

Your community welcome. This weekend of events (Jan 9–11, 2026) helps you make connections, explore campus, and feel at home in your new community.

In short:

  • NSO: Academic prep + resource connections
  • Winter Welcome: Community, involvement, and campus traditions
  • Both: Expected and strongly encouraged for all new Bears — together they give you the confidence and support to start your semester ready and connected.
