Lena Kisner’s passion for early childhood special education spurred her investigation of preschool inclusion rates in rural Kansas schools. She’s a special education director, overseeing children from birth to age 21 for five interlocal school districts.

A Legacy of Helping Generations of Health Science Students
Growing up in Greeley in the 1960s and 1970s as an only child, Dr. Mary Jo Drew ‘79 had, as she put it, an idyllic childhood. With two encouraging and ahead-of-their-time parents, she was allowed to follow her interests wherever they led. A self-proclaimed “science geek,” she had to know more about everything around her, whether it be rocks, the clouds in the sky or the organs in the human body.

Ten UNC students traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to help clean up the Mississippi River. The trip was part of GEO 111, a course designed to give students hands-on field experience and equip them to use that experience to solve real-world problems.
