About the Phelps Family Awards

The Phelps Family Awards were established to recognize Brian Phelps, son of the Donors and a 2012 graduate of the University, and to honor Dr. Sherilyn Morrow, Communication Studies Professor.

Bob and Bonnie Phelps created these scholarship funds as a means: 1) to support student success at the University and, 2) to call attention to three (3) core values and behaviors, using the acronym “CAP”, which the Donors believe to be among the keystone pillars for building and living meaningful lives:

  • Contribute…by volunteering time and personal skills, talents, abilities, experience and passion around issues in service to the community;
  • Achieve…by displaying a bias toward action and performance (including academically), self-reliance, persevering, and overcoming obstacles to accomplishing goals;
  • Pay-it-forward…by impacting the lives of others in meaningful and positive ways to them through small or large, random or planned, acts of kindness, caring, and “giving back.”

Past Phelps Scholars

  • Carter Norris (2025-26): History, Secondary Education
    • As a teacher, Carter is dedicated to developing an equitable and compassionate classroom for all students that enter through their door. Their primary goal is to make all students feel heard, seen and supported. Carter’s research is exploring disability rights through an historical analysis and case study of Willowbrook State School, an institution for children with intellectual disabilities that was closed in 1987 due to poor conditions.
  • Yasmin Berumen Martinez (2025-26): Biological Sciences
    • For Yasmin Berumen Martinez, help means if you have the skills, you use them to help others. As they pursue a career as a physician assistant, this value drives their passion for service. Volunteering with organizations like Solida del Sol and César Chávez Sunrise Bus has allowed Yasmin to empower others through English as a Second Language classes and support vital health programs for agricultural workers.
  • Marjorie Burnes (2024-25): Criminology and Criminal Justice
    • Marjorie deeply cares about all members of society and has devoted herself to working in the criminal justice system. Her undergraduate research and internship work at UNC situated her in a halfway house where she worked with the residents on reintegration programs, discovering which programs they believed were the most beneficial.
