EBS Diversity and Equity Featured Speaker

Connecting Gentrification Processes of Bilingual Education to U.S. Cities: Uncovering Possibilities of Resistance and Transformation
Featured Speaker: James A. Gambrell, Ed.D. Professor of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, University of Northern Colorado
The Event
Scholars have been using the concept of gentrification to describe the processes by which primarily White, heritage English speakers have mainstreamed and occupied narratives, spaces, and resources in bilingual education.
In this session, Dr. James A. Gambrell deepens this critique by putting the gentrification metaphor in more literal conversation with processes of urban gentrification, along with grassroots efforts to resist it. The talk ends with a call to education scholars to step outside our micro-fields of scholarship to urge students to connect, interrogate, and disrupt societal patterns of injustice.
