Biography

Lin Suzanne Allen grew up on a farm in American Falls, Idaho. One winter morning the sixth grader departed from the local train depot with her parents to visit New York and the nation’s capital. Sealed in her memory of that trip is Arlington’s eternal flame. Allen’s interest in studying heroes and legacy continued in high school where she participated in debate, played the role of mother of a soldier missing in action in The death and life of Larry Benson, and performed dramatic readings of Luigi Pirandello’s War.

The summer following high school graduation, Allen enrolled in The Foreign Study League, where students visited six European countries, with a curriculum based on “Comparative Cultures and Governments.”

She holds a B.A. degree in Speech & Drama from Idaho State University, where she studied John Kennedy’s speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association; an M.A. in Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied the discourse of the American Revolution and nativist rhetoric including Maria Monk’s Awful Disclosures of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from the University of Oregon, where she studied Graceland.

Dr. Allen served as Director of Forensics for Idaho State University and taught in the Greenspun School of Communication at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she received a grant to analyze Dallas’ Sixth Floor Window in her research on the Kennedy legacy.

She joined UNC’S faculty in 1992, where her highlights include teaching a Study Abroad course in Athens, developing MetaMock, a forum joining Drama and Law, and team-

teaching a Scientific Communication course with Biology Professors Dr. Scott Franklin and Cameron Duke.

Allen’s Sabbatical Research includes the study of Supreme Court cases including Association of Molecular Pathologists v Myriad Genetics and Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

In Summer 2024 Allen completed a virtual presentation and paper for ECAH (European Conference on Arts and Humanities) analyzing the Supreme Court case Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v Goldsmith. In Spring 2025 Allen completed a virtual presentation and paper for ACAH (Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities): “Polymorph Wants a Cracker: Is AI an Inventor or ‘Stochastic Parrot’ Hacker?”

As of January 2026, she has received acceptance to present research at ACAH 2026,

paper coauthored with Dr. Sheila Yeh, Dean of UNC Libraries:

“Apocryphal Assumptions About Artistry and Artificial Intelligence: a Case Analysis of Anderson V. Stability AI Ltd.”

Their next research project focuses on Gen Alpha and AI.
