Biography
Dr. John Hancock joined the UNC Student Affairs leadership team in 2022 with a focus on improving population health and well-being among UNC students in the service of student success.
Dr. Hancock is a licensed psychologist with more than 30 years of experience in college health leadership. He began his leadership career by serving as Director of Counseling and Testing at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) for 13 years, during which he also obtained funding for OIT’s first federal Trio grant, serving first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities. He next served as Associate Dean of Students and Chief Psychologist at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon for 15 years, where he provided critical leadership in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. While at Lewis & Clark, Dr. Hancock was the recipient of the Reverend Mark Duntley Award for outstanding contributions to the Division of Student Affairs.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hancock has focused on reducing health disparities for historically marginalized populations. He has also focused on reducing suicide risk in college students, including co-founding the Oregon College and University Suicide Prevention Project; serving as a clinical trainer for the Suicide Prevention Resource Center; and serving on the Steering Committee for the State of Oregon Youth Suicide Intervention and Prevention Plan. Dr. Hancock has earned diplomate status with the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. He is a past recipient of the Burns Crookston ACPA Graduate Research Award for outstanding research in Student Affairs.
