Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology
Biography
Dr. Amy Stone is a Colorado native who has spent her career focused on helping medical and health professional students learn and understand immunology and infectious diseases. She has also been fascinated by infectious diseases and, upon learning the efficiency and power of the innate immune system, your first line of defense against infectious diseases, she knew where she wanted to focus her efforts.
Dr. Stone completed her PhD in Immunology at the Integrated Department of Immunology at the University of Colorado Denver and National Jewish Health in 2013, where she studied the role of innate immune cells in the response to Hepatitis C virus. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Innate Immunology at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she focused on innate immune responses to West Nile virus. As a postdoctoral fellow, she discovered her love for teaching, serving as the founding leader of the Education Core at the Center for Innate Immunity and Immunological Diseases.
Since 2018, Dr. Stone has been teaching medical and health professions students full time. At UNC COM, she teaches immunology and microbiology to first and second year pre-clinical students. Further, she currently supports student research projects on immunological and infectious disease topics, and studies how students learn and integrate immunology and infectious disease knowledge into clinical practice.
Dr. Stone welcomes discussions on immunology and infectious disease topics and potential research projects. She encourages interested COM and health professions students to contact her directly for an appointment.
