Athletics

At UNC, staying active is more than physical fitness. It's about belonging to something bigger, challenging yourself and having fun along the way. From cheering in the stands at a Bears game to conquering your first climbing route or scoring the winning goal in an intramural championship, every day brings a new opportunity to get in the game.

Where Competition Meets Community

At UNC, being active isn’t just about breaking a sweat. It’s about finding your place, pushing your limits and connecting with others who share your passion. Whether you’re cheering on the Bears at Nottingham Field, climbing the indoor wall, hitting the trails or joining an intramural team, there’s a way for everyone to get in the game.

UNC Bears Athletics

The UNC Bears compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Big Sky Conference. With navy blue and gold colors and Klawz the Bear leading the charge, Bears athletics brings excitement and pride to campus year-round.

Mascots

UNC has proudly been represented by a bear since 1923, earning the nickname after athletes were once called the “Teachers.” The bear tradition was inspired by an Alaskan totem pole donated by a 1897 alumnus.

Today, Klawz is the face of UNC athletics, energizing fans at all sports games. He made his debut at Nottingham Field in 2003 and continues the Bear spirit at every event.

Where the Bears Play

  • Nottingham Field: Home to football and track and field. Game days here bring energy, tailgates and the roar of the student section.
  • Bank of Colorado Arena: The place to watch basketball, volleyball and wrestling up close. Feel the intensity as fans pack the stands.
  • Jackson Stadium: Where women’s soccer takes the field.
  • Jackson Field: Home of Bears baseball.
  • Butler-Hancock Swimming Pool: Where the women’s swimming and diving team competes.
