A Career in Teaching
A lot is said about having a career in teaching – many good things, and some bad. But rather than focus on some of the controversial opinions about the potential benefits or drawbacks of being an educator, let’s look at the facts! Did you know the base salary for a first year teacher with a bachelor’s degree in District 6 (Greeley and Evans School District) is $53,040?
Other local school district base salaries are:
- Poudre School District: $58,000-$59,490
- Eaton School District: $48,500
- Cherry Creek School District: $62,000
- Thompson School District: $46,129-$54,633
Math Ed Escape Room!
On April 20th, 5:00 pm, your peer mentors will be hosting a game night for all math education students in Ross 2238! This will be a great opportunity to meet other people in the programs from the same or different phases, as well as to take some time to relax and have some fun before finals. Candy and snacks will be provided!
Mathematical Sciences Club!
Mathematical Sciences Club meets every week on Fridays from 1:25 – 2:15 in Ross 2060. We play fun math games, learn about various math topics, and enjoy FREE pizza! Everyone is welcome! This is a great opportunity to connect with other people interested in math and some of the amazing math faculty.
Group Advising Information
ALL students in the Middle School and Secondary Mathematics Teacher Education Programs were REQUIRED to attend one of the group advising meetings. If you were unable to attend one of the meetings, you must meet with the Peer Mentor OR complete the Canvas assignment to learn about updated program information. You still must meet with your advisor to get your pin before you are able to register.
Your advisor will give you your PIN which is REQUIRED to register! Registration opens on Monday, March 30th! If you haven’t met with your advisor already, reach out soon to do so!
Praxis Info
To graduate from UNC in either of the mathematics teaching concentrations, future teachers need to pass the appropriate Praxis exam. To send your scores to UNC, use the code 4074 when taking the exam. You are given 180 minutes (3 hours) to complete 66 questions (not all questions are scored the same). Each attempt costs $130 but you can take it as many times as necessary. You must take the Praxis before STEP 363 and pass it before STEP 464 (Student Teaching).
Versions and Passing Scores:
- Secondary Math Teachers (6-12) take Praxis 5165 and get a score of 159 to pass
- Middle School Math Teachers (6-8) take Praxis 5164 and get a score of 157 to pass
The Ed Prep Office has a special discount rate with 240 Tutoring that provides access to Praxis study materials like flashcards, quizzes, practice tests and more! It’s $20/month and can be canceled at any time. Questions should be directed to Tish Thompson.
