Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) at Detachment 90 gives students attending University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, Front Range Community College, and Aims Community College the opportunity to commission as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force. Recognized as one of the top AFROTC Detachments in the Country, Detachment 90 has been awarded “Best Large Detachment in the Nation” in 2019 and 2021. While pursuing academic degrees, AFROTC cadets are provided numerous opportunities to explore the multitude of career fields available in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force.

Captain Allen Plack
Operations Flight Commander (OFC)
Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies
As the OFC, Capt. Plack oversees all professional military and developmental training. This includes being the key advisor on all cadet-run operations, including Leadership Lab (LLAB) and Physical Training (PT). Prior to joining Det 90, Captain Plack served as an intelligence officer in the Indo-Pacific theater supporting strategic and tactical signals intelligence operations as well as joint special operations intelligence. He has also served as a prior enlisted C-130E/H Evaluator Loadmaster, Air Force Special Operations Command Combat Aviation Advisor, and C-145A Instructor Special Mission Aviator with multiple deployments in support of Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa and Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Orient Compass. Captain Plack received his commission through Officer Training School and has earned degrees in Journalism and Education.
Staff Sergeant Ced Patterson
NCOIC, Administration Management
As the NCOIC of Personnel Management, SSgt Patterson oversees personnel actions for Det 90 cadre and cadets. He hails from Little Rock, Arkansas and has spent six years overseas in Japan, Korea, and Germany. SSgt Patterson has been deployed twice to both Jordan and Qatar as well as received five achievement medals and one commendation medal.
Colonel Gregg Johnson
Commander, Detachment 90
Professor of Aerospace Studies
Col Johnson is the Det 90 Commander and chairs the Department of Aerospace Studies. He received his commission through AFROTC Det 90/Colorado State University and has over 3,600 flight hours, primarily in the C-17A Globemaster III. He has commanded at the squadron and group levels, and served Joint tours at USTRANSCOM and the Office of the Defense Representative-Pakistan.
Technical Sergeant Meghan Kalisek
ROTC Training Instructor
TSgt Kalisek serves as the detachment key enlisted leader and advisor to the Commander on cadet academics, military training and discipline. Additionally, she oversees personnel actions for Det 90 cadre and cadets. She has joint service experience and has lent her expertise to high level positions such as the Air Mobility Command, Command Chief Executive and deployed in support of CJTF-Horn of Africa. TSgt Kalisek earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan, and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Business Administration.
Captain Robert Butler
Recruiting Officer (RO)
Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies
As RO, Captain Butler is responsible for the detachment’s recruiting efforts and enrollment process, from initial contact to cadet activation. He earned his commission through Officer Training School (OTS) as a Nuclear and Missile Operations Officer (13N). As a 13N, he has served as a Mission Lead Missile Combat Crew Commander, Instructor, Evaluator, and Flight Commander while performing over 7,600 nuclear alert hours monitoring 150 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM). Prior to his commission, Captain Butler was an enlisted Air Traffic Controller (ATC).
Lieutenant Colonel Scott McCoy
Operations Officer (DO)
Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies
As the Operations Officer, Lt Col McCoy oversees all Detachment 90 operations to include the Cadre, Cadets, and Air Force Institute for Technology Students located at Colorado State University. He is the primary communication link between AFROTC regional and national headquarters. He earned his commission through AFROTC Det 90 at Colorado State University and is a Navigator (CSO) with over 2,400 flight hours in the KC-135R Stratotanker and the OC-135B Open Skies. He has served at the wing level, done a tour on the Air Staff, and a Joint Tour at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.
Captain Shelby Kniss
Education Officer (EO)
Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies
As the Education Officer (EO), Captain Kniss manages academic records, the detachment’s self-assessment programs, and oversees all cadre continuing education programs. Capt Kniss graduated from the United States Air Force Academy, earning a degree in Meteorology. She is a Weather Officer; most recently serving with the 89th Operations Support Squadron at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. Capt Kniss led a 20-person flight providing weather services in direct support of the POTUS and VPOTUS travel.
