Student Employee Leave Programs
Student employees are not eligible to receive paid vacation leave, holiday pay, shift differential, unemployment compensation, or university closing leave pay. Students are also not eligible to receive
compensation while attending jury duty from the University; however, the department can opt to pay
scheduled hours for jury duty if their budget allows.
Effective 1/1/2021 in accordance with Healthy Families and Workplace Act, all student employees will
accrue sick leave. Colorado Senate Bill 20-205 requires all employers with 16 or more employees to offer paid sick leave in the amount of one hour for every 30 hours worked, to a maximum of 48 hours per year. Up to 48 hours of unused sick leave will roll over to the next year and unused leave will not be paid out. An employer may satisfy the accrual requirements by providing employees with sick leave that meets or
exceeds these requirements. Federal regulations prohibit institutions from utilizing Federal Work-Study
funding to cover fringe benefits, including student sick leave. Consequently, any sick leave taken by students under the Federal Work-Study program must be paid out of individual departmental budgets.
FAMLI
Colorado implemented FAMLI in January 2024 which provides paid family medical leave for eligible Colorado residents. Most Colorado employees become eligible to take paid leave after they have earned at least $2,500 in wages subject to FAMLI premiums, over a period of about a year. UNC has chosen SunLife as our private FAMLI plan administrator. Employees interested in applying for FAMLI benefits will need to apply through SunLife. FAMLI is designed to run concurrently with FMLA. If FAMLI leave is used for a reason that also qualifies as leave under FMLA, then the leave also counts as FMLA leave.
