FAMLI Leave

Colorado implemented FAMLI in January 2024 which provides paid family medical leave for eligible Colorado residents. Most Colorado employees become eligible to take paid leave after they have earned at least $2,500 in wages subject to FAMLI premiums, over a period of about a year. UNC has chosen SunLife as our private FAMLI plan administrator. Employees interested in applying for FAMLI benefits will need to apply through SunLife. FAMLI is designed to run concurrently with FMLA. If FAMLI leave is used for a reason that also qualifies as leave under FMLA, then the leave also counts as FMLA leave.

  • FAMLI Leave Summary

FAMLI provides a portion of an employee's weekly salary for up to 12 weeks per 12-month period to care for themselves or a family member. Employee's may receive wage replacement of 40 to 90 percent of their wages. UNC has opted to have SunLife reimburse us for approved wages for salaried employees. Hourly employees, including students or temporary employees, will receive approved wages directly from SunLife. Employees are eligible to use their available UNC leave to make their salary whole while out on approved leave.

FAMLI benefits are primary to other leave benefits available to employees, such as parental leave or short-term disability. STD benefits will be reduced if the employee qualifies for FAMLI benefits. FAMLI benefits work concurrently with FMLA if the situation qualifies under FMLA guidelines.
